Dirty Water, Bad Blood

Festiwal Around the Coyot, Paulina Arts Center, Chicago, USA,
22 September 1990

The action quite faithfully repeated the performance given at the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw in June of the same year.
The artist stood on a chair by the wall for a while, with his hands raised and holding a coat, and then he flagellated himself. This sequence was repeated several times.
Next, he stripped down to his underwear, washed his body in dirty water and dried himself with a “towel” with “Solidarność” written on it.
Afterwards, Warpechowski cupped his chest and face, with one cupping-glass sharply cutting him on the cheek. He skipped and, finally, poured the blood on the “Solidarność” cloth.
