Water

Biuro Poezji [Poetry Office], Warsaw,
1972

This performance initiated the activity of Andrzej Partum’s Biuro Poezji – the author’s original gallery, a place of independent artistic presentation and one of the international centres of the mail-art movement. It was there that Warpechowski for the first time engaged a living fish in his act, in which the fish lay on a board marked WATER. The animal wriggled, indicating the lack of its life-giving fluid, whereas the audience were given glasses with clean, cold water and asked to consider its taste.
